HABITAT FOR HUMANITY SF/SCV’S “AMERICAN DREAM WALK” SCORES PERFECT 10 WITH MARK BALLAS AND TREVOR DONOVAN
October 6, 2010, Los Angeles, CA – Grab a tool kit, lace up your sneakers and get ready to Walk with the Stars at Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys’ fundraiser, “American Dream Walk,” at Pacoima Plaza on Saturday, October 16, 2010.
Join Mark Ballas, award-winning dancer on “Dancing with the Stars,” as he leads handy citizens and celebrities on a 5K walk from Pacoima Plaza to Habitat Pacoima Site, where helpers with a can-do attitude participate in a fun construction relay to help raise a wall for Habitat’s newest homeowners. Then head back to Pacoima Plaza for an awards celebration with BBQ and special celebrity entertainment.
Trevor Donovan, “90210” star and avid Habitat supporter, emcees the event and is joined by Matt Lanter (90210), The Laker Girls, Ariel Winter and Nolan Gould (both from Modern Family), and stars from hit TV shows CSI, Medium, NCIS, The Young & The Restless, and more. “American Dream Walk” is a family-friendly event and Habitat encourages youths to share in the experience.
Last year, over 900 community members and celebrities took part in the festivities and joined Wayne Colmer, chairman of the Habitat SF/SCV affiliate, in advocating for the need to “make our world a better, safer place to live – especially for children.”
Habitat for Humanity provides affordable homes with 0% mortgages for low-income families and empowers families to become productive members of their community. “The Habitat Enriched Neighborhood model brings in services and education that promote self sufficiency. Our communities are built around a model that requires sweat equity and provides supportive services, going well beyond traditional affordable housing,” Colmer explained. “This new model literally lifts the top off the ‘concrete ceiling’ that impairs the lives of the working poor and limits the future of their children.”
As a result, Habitat SF/SCV reports 100% graduation rates, 0% foreclosure rates, 92% of teens enrolled in college or trade school, and drastically reduced teen pregnancy rates. The Habitat Pacoima project consists of 61 homes, with 37 already occupied and the rest completed by summer 2011.
